Hurricanes, Holidays and Hassles in Evacuations

It appears that the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season will be a big hurricane season indeed. There are things you can do to minimize your risk and exposure, which could cause you and your family severe problems in the event of a large category storm, which enters your area. It is good to find family or friends that live in nearby states that you can go to visit and stay with, as many of the hotels will be completely filled up.

Additionally, if it is close to a three-day weekend you may find yourself with no gasoline at the gas stations to fill up your car in order to get to a nearby state. It is for this reason that many people state even when mandatory evacuations are required by law that some people stay because they assume that category of the hurricane will be less than it actually is. But even a low category storm can bring torrential rains and severe flooding.

In fact more people have died from flooding then they do from the wind or flying debris. Mandatory evacuations are often a hassle because getting out of town for that many people causes incredible traffic jams even if you leave at two in the morning.

During holidays it is even worse and just because you get out of town does not mean that there is not another bottleneck where freeways intersect in the next state. Sometimes the traffic jams go along for over 400 miles and that includes every single possible escape route and side road highway. Please consider all this in 2006, stay up on the information and play it safe for you and your family.
