Don't Let Holiday Expenses Give you the Winter Blues

Author: Kelly Kennedy

Its that time of year again. The holidays tend to sneak up on us giving many little time to save. Regardless of how much you have saved up for this time of year, or choose to spend, its inevitable that you will come out with some sort of debt. In order to keep your holiday debt down this year or stop it before it even starts use these tips as a guide below.

Review your current bills and their rates
You will find that rates change all the time on cell phones, credit cards, auto insurance and mortgages to just name a few. You can call other providers and find out what they are offering and switch to that, but first call the company you are currently with and let them know and often times they will match or beat others offers.

Compare banks
Depending on your current bank, there are banks that offer free checking and online bill pay, which is very convenient. So if you are paying a fee at your bank, shop around for other options that may benefit you more. When searching for a bank which you can do online make sure the bank is a member of the FDIC, which means the money is insured in case anything were ever to happen to the bank.

Dont miss payments/deadlines
Missing payments or deadlines is your own fault, so just make sure you are organized and get your bills in on time or if you rent a movie, return it before it becomes past due. By avoiding late fees you will be saving yourself extra cash that you can put toward gifts.

Put some cash aside
Instead of trying to save right before the holiday season, start small instead. Simply set aside a certain amount each paycheck whether it is $10 or $50. This way, when the time comes you will have that money saved up and wont be spending your whole paycheck on holiday items or putting it on your credit card for that matter. Some ways to set aside money if you are struggling to do so now, is instead of going out to lunch or dinner every other night, limit yourself to a few days and eat at home. Take the money you would have spent and put it towards your savings.
