Autism Treatments

Author: Max Bellamy

Autism is a disorder in the development of a person's mental state. At the moment, there is no known cure for autism, although researches have yielded treatments especially for children who are diagnosed as autistic. It is believed that early treatments can help the patient adjust better to the condition and lessen behavioral problems attached to the disorder.

Since the actual manifestation of autism varies from person to person, treatment is also dependent on the needs of the patient. Usually, an autistic patient has to undergo a lifelong treatment to keep the condition under control.

Therapy

A person who is diagnosed with autism can be treated via therapy. There are two types of therapy: physical therapy and communication therapy.

A common symptom for autism is the manifestation of poor motor skills. Physical therapy is employed by physicians to help and guide the development of a patient's motor functions. This will also help the patient understand different simulation and textures as well as different sounds. Play therapy is a technique used to allow the patient a free environment where he can roam around, touch objects and interact with other patients.

Communication therapy is a technique that focuses on a patient's inability to communicate through speech. It is used to help the child develop the ability to speak.

Behavioral Modification

Behavioral modification is used to help treat inappropriate, repetitive and aggressive behaviors displayed by autistic patients. The programs are customized depending on the need of the patient. It usually involves a one-on-one training between the therapist or caregiver and the patient.

Picture Exchange Communication Systems

If the ability to speak is never developed in the patient, he is taught how to communicate with the use of pictures. This technique forms a series of therapy systems called the Picture Exchange Communications Systems.

Medications

Medications are prescribed to patients to help control and treat various symptoms for autism. Antidepressants or stimulants are given depending on the needs of the patient.
